Are you a parent and/or carer of a child or young person with additional needs living in the Richmond-upon-Thames area?
Would you like advice and support on any number of issues?
The Children and Families service support families with disabled children and disabled parents in a range of different ways. We work with disabled children and young people up to their 19th birthday and we also support disabled parents.
Below is a quote from a parent of a disabled child that has used our service
‘Yvonne has been absolutely amazing. I did not know such service existed. It has made me feel far more positive and optimistic for the opportunities available for my children. I now know there are services / people who can help and support us as a family. This is a fantastic service.’
Some of the ways that we can support you are
- helping families to maximise their income by claiming welfare and benefits they are entitled to, including Disability Living Allowance, Employment Support Allowance and Tax Credits
- applying for local grants or national grants when needed
- applying for a child to go on the local authority Disabled Children’s Register
- referring families to other services for support
The service operates on Mondays and Fridays 9 to 5pm.

Richmond AID is a partner of the access project
access is a consortium of local charities. In partnership we possess a wealth of experience and knowledge on a wide range of subjects related to the support of children and young people with additional needs, their siblings and family members.
When your child is first diagnosed with a disability or illness, you may be provided with a vast amount of facts and statistics which could be daunting, or worse, you may receive no information at all.
Perhaps you and your family are coping, then your child goes through a new transitional stage, perhaps a new school or facing puberty and you find yourself in need of new or different services and don’t know where to go!
Whatever the situation, access can help point you in the right direction and can support you with a wide range of issues including:
- Social, leisure and out of school activities
- Financial support for families (including benefits)
- Education
- Short breaks and respite
- Health services
- Local authority services
- Support for parent/carers
- Support for siblings
- Counselling services
- Support from local charities
