Companion Cycling

Companion Cycling is a local charity that provides cycling with a companion or ‘pilot’, which means that people who wouldn’t be able to cycle themselves (for whatever reason) can enjoy getting out on a bike in the beautiful Bushy Park.

We spoke to them and learnt that the scheme is going from strength to strength: over the past year they have supported users with disabilities and additional needs to enjoy over 3,000 rides around Bushy Park. We were told that a ride on one of the specialised cycles can “Open up new horizons for people, enabling them to enjoy an activity with friends or family which might otherwise be impossible – and there is the delight of enjoying views of Bushy Park and its wildlife at a leisurely pace.”
People can go with a family member, friend or carer who is able to ride with you, but if this isn’t possible then a volunteer will ride with you around the park. This is available to all and there are a wide range of cycles which cater for every need – everything from ordinary bikes, tricycles of all sizes and dual bikes through to wheelchair bikes.
Companion Cycling are open seven days a week throughout the year (mostly mornings) and there will always be a volunteer on hand to make sure everyone’s needs are met.
So why not give Companion Cycling a try? We were told that anyone can visit and take a test ride to try it out. They are based at the Stockyard in the south west corner of Bushy Park (near St Mary’s Parish Church in Hampton) where the Royal Parks offices are located. It is always wise to let them know you are coming either by sending an email to [email protected] or by phoning on 07961 344545.
